This is the Verbena from Lantern Manufacturing.
The Verbena is a stereo (mono in, stereo out, MISO) “dramatic” reverb, capable of a vast range of reverberated effects from standard reverb, pitch-shifted reverb, reverse reverb, and even modulated reverb, all available in any combination of your choosing.
The Verbena uses found and forgotten technology from the 1980s and early 1990s, including DRAM (hence “DRAMatic” reverb) to achieve all of the aforementioned effects, glued together with standard logic-based architecture and requisite supporting filter topologies alongside a dense modulation and feedback network. There is no programming or modern DSP involved in the operation of the Verbena, yet it is still able to recreate many modern reverb tones and features.
This pedal uses a standard 9VDC center negative power supply (no batteries), drawing roughly 170-220mA during operation, depending on Pre-Delay time - faster delay times require more current (initial power up may require more current, use 500mA power jack if available). Power is required to pass signal, even when in bypass (a la Boss-style pedals). On power up it may take a few seconds for the pedal to fully
produce reverberated effects. This is normal. The controls are as follows:
Pre-Delay: sets the delay time before the reverberated effect is heard, from immediate up until around 3 seconds, with the effect becoming more degraded as the Pre-Delay time is extended and the system clock is dragged out.
Diffuse: controls the duration of the reverberated effect, ranging from chorus/flanger-like whispers up to beyond slapback territory. Around noon is a good starting point for dense, rich reverb.
Dwell: controls the amount of feedback for the reverberated effect, essentially changing the size of the “room” and how long the effect “dwells” in the space. Depending on your other settings, maxing out Dwell will push your repeats just into runaway feedback.
Mix: controls the balance of the dry signal (fully counterclockwise) and reverberated signal (fully clockwise). When using higher settings for Pre-Delay or Diffuse a more natural sound can be achieved by favoring the Dry signal, allowing the effect to sit better in the mix.
Move: controls the rate (speed) of a set-depth modulation network, from no modulation (fully counterclockwise) to near-ring mod-esque modulation (fully clockwise). The rate of modulation is displayed by the LED on the face of the pedal. As noted, turning the Move control fully counterclockwise will disable the modulation source.
Pitch: controls the pitch of a portion of the feedback (Dwell) network, allowing you to transpose your reverberated tone +/-1 octave in 12 half steps (semitones) each (24 total semitones). +/-1 octave is found fully clockwise and fully counterclockwise, respectively, while +/- a 5th is found around 2:30 and 10:30 on the dial, respectively, and neutral (no pitch shifting) is found around noon. Note that depending on how other controls are set the neutral/unison pitch may cascade into runaway feedback more quickly, as the resonance compounds.
Reverse: a footswitch that, when engaged, will reverse the reverberated signal, depending on how you have the Pre-Delay control set. Note that there must be at least some amount of Pre-Delay for the reverse effect to work (you can’t reverse what
isn’t there, after all).
Enjoy!
